Publishing has always been the home turf of SGML and many of XML's creators.
Databases and other 'hard-core computing' activities frequently had little in common with the structural chaos SGML supported.
Web developers were rarely orthodox anything, but sometimes antagonistic to SGML and often hamstrung by the limited structures databases had to offer.
