Word and XSLT
-
At import
users can specify an XSLT transformation that will present their XML information with a comfortable WordprocessingML surrounding. Developers who want to create environments which let users edit XML without realizing that it isn't a regular Word document will want to use this approach. Linking styling to markup at any other time, however, requires some arduous Smart Document programming.

At export
users can specify an XSLT transformation that stores their content in WordprocessingML or another form. While Word can do a simple "Save Data Only" that strips out the WordprocessingML, an XSLT stylesheet provides a lot more flexibility if information from WordprocessingML, and not just the explicit interface, needs to appear in the final result.
