Tape Drive

Magnetic tape had

been developed by

the Germans during

World War II.

By the 1950's it was a

cheap way to store

data on computers,

though because

tapes were very

long and could be read only one item at a time, it was a slow process, better used for long-term storage of less frequently used data than for random access.
