Types of transformation
-
Translation
Translations tend to be the simplest kind of transformation, involving repackaging information. Some translations only translate labels, while others have to create or rebuild structures between the original and the target document.
-
Fragmentation
In building these slides, I created a long XML document, which I then broke down into individual parts. Sometimes this just means creating individual files, and other times it means sending content to multiple recipients. Division, redirection, and sometimes reduction are involved in fragmentation.

Supplementing
Bringing information across interchange boundaries often demands the creation of information. When customers order goods, the SKU they provide can be linked to location information for the warehouse, for instance. Similarly, formatting transformations add details about presentation.
