Million instructions per second. No one was ever sure which instruction had to be repeated a million times to count, so this basic measurement has rarely meant more than a manufacturer's fond wishes. What is clear is that the number of MIPS in a given chip is constantly on the rise, and the price per MIPS is plummeting.
