Tables are a step up from lists, allowing relationships to develop beyond location in a list. Computer logic is extremely line-oriented, and the jump to tabular organizations took a fair amount of time - computers needed a sizable amount of memory to process large arrays of information and storage space to hold it.The spreadsheet is the strongest vision of the table, remaining locked (for now) into its two-dimensional grid carrying numbers and data. The real joy of tables comes when we make tables of tables of tables of tables and let them visit each other.
