The Future of XML Scripting
- Hazarding a guess XML scripting is still only getting started. The tools are more sophisticated than they were at this point in HTML's adoption curve, but they suffer from their inheritance of HTML tools.
- Browsers as critical issue JavaScript is the only technology for browser-based scripting that has received a wide and warm welcome. At this point, however, it isn't at all clear how JavaScript will be integrated with XML, beyond general acceptance that the DOM is important.
- Multiple approaches on the server Because developers have much more choice on the server, the existing variety of scripting tools is likely to continue. If JavaScript and XSLT catch on in the browser, those tools will probably gain strength on the server to better distribute processing. Integrated solutions like Zope seem to answer a lot of common problems as well.
- Work for all Application developers are just learning how to combine XML with their work. Scripts of whatever type have a critical role to play in this integration process, and will probably fill gaps for years to come.
