"You read it here first - the infobahn is a load of hype" (Wired Magazine 2.02). No one -Ęthe military, the corporations, the securities analysts, the wonks, or even the people in the computer companies know quite where we're headed. We first walked onto the infobahn in the middle of the last century when the means for mass communication first appeared, presses for newspapers and the telegraph to send them news almost 'as it happened.' Suddenly 'and that's the way it is' made sense. Fiber-optics increase the bandwidth, give us many more lanes to travel, but most of us seem stalled at the on-ramp. Time for some cyberpunk hitchhiking.
