Television

The glowing tube that has mesmerized us for decades wasn't always a sure thing. It consumed massive amounts of development money, and programmers doubted they could find material to fill more than a few hours a day. Its growth was phenomenal once the networks crossed the country, and America developed into a nation of couch potatoes for better or worse. Television has marched across the globe, differing slightly from place to place as needed to best infiltrate our consciousness. Even now, when we can control the video and sound it presents by buying a camcorder, we don't really know what's on the other side of the tube.
